New Haven, CT. (June 6, 2016) – Principal Mitch Hirsch AIA, LEED AP and Associate Principal Gina Narracci AIA were on site at Hancher for the installation of two important works of art. Both Hancher and UI are pleased for this opportunity to showcase original art in the new performing arts center scheduled for a ribbon-cutting and opening performances this fall.

Anonymous Creature (2009), by the celebrated and internationally acclaimed West African sculptor El Anatsui, is installed in the atrium, where patrons will view it immediately on entering the building. The drapery-like work, is a rippled 120” in x 228” surface that is composed of discarded aluminum liquor bottle caps that are stitched with wire. Mitch comments, “Although this extraordinary work of art stands on its own, it also resonates wonderfully with the site, the architecture, and the theater.” El Anatsui prefers that his “canvases” are hung without specific instructions, creating a unique effect on the walls they occupy.

The mural We All Perform by Anita Jung, a UI School of Art & Art History professor, is a collaboration with seventh-graders from all around the state of Iowa. “This is an excellent and vibrant grass roots artistic collaboration that creates a special bond between Iowa's young students and its premier performing arts cultural center.”
