New Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital gains local approval

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Dec. 11, 2013) — The design for a new suburban Chicago hospital by Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects has been approved by local planning authorities, making the new Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital in Illinois one step closer to reality. The Lake Forest Plan Commission unanimously approved the overall site plan for the hospital’s campus revitalization project. This action is one in a series of city approvals required before the 450,000-square-foot project can be built. Next, the City Council reviews the plan.

Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital is community hospital and academic medical center on a 160-acre campus that dates to 1942. The project includes a new campus plan, the centerpiece of which is a new hospital and medical office facilities. The campus is surrounded by a residential neighborhood and contains areas of woods, hills, and fields. Set amid this largely open space will be a series of low-rise buildings arranged along a lake in a crescent-shape: four three-story pavilions that will contain patient rooms and a two-story pavilion for the medical offices.

In addition to the new inpatient hospital and medical office building, the campus revitalization project includes parking, improved roadway and site circulation, new access from U.S. highway 41, and landscaping and stormwater management.

The project is expected to be completed in 2017.
