NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Oct. 16, 2014) — About 1,000 well-wishers, including Cesar Pelli and PCPA’s design team, left their mark on Hancher Auditorium in the form of signatures to the new University of Iowa performing art center’s structure last week.

The Leave Your Mark festivities, organized by the project’s general contractor, Mortensen Construction, took place over two days in which the public was invited to visit the construction site in Iowa City and sign a steel beam that will be part of the building. After construction crews hoisted the beam into place, a ceremony nearby included a musical performance by singer-songwriter Susan Werner, a University of Iowa graduate. The celebratory event fell roughly at the halfway point of construction for the building, which is expected to open in 2015.

The new Hancher Auditorium is a replacement for the University of Iowa’s renowned performing arts center. The building will be located on hilltop overlooking the Iowa River, on the main route into Iowa City—a prominent location for the state’s premier performing arts presenter. With sweeping horizontal forms that echo the landscape and the curve of the river, the design draws from the building’s natural surroundings.
