WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (Oct. 26, 2011) — The Los Angeles Chapter of the American Institute of Architects has bestowed it Building Team of the Year Award on the project team of the Red Building.

The award was presented Oct. 26 at the Pacific Design Center, the landmark West Hollywood showroom-and-office complex of which the Red Building is the final installment. The Red Building will be completed early 2012, concluding nearly 40 years of design and construction for the Pacific Design Center. Cesar Pelli designed the first building, nicknamed the Blue Whale, with Gruen Associates in the 1970s. The Green Building, designed with what is now Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects, followed a decade later.

The most dynamic of the three buildings, the Red Building is composed of two curved, sloping towers atop seven levels of parking. Between the towers will be a courtyard planted with palm trees. The six-story West Tower slopes inward against the Hollywood Hills. The eight-story East Tower curves upward.

Selected by the AIA Los Angeles Board of Directors, the Building Team of the Year Award acknowledges the efforts of a variety of entities successfully working together in the formation of a significant contribution to the built environment of Los Angeles. The collaboration must demonstrate success in both design and social impact and must be an inspiration for future collaborations that will enrich the architectural heritage of the city.

In addition to Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects as Design Architect, the project team for the Red Building includes Gruen Associates as Associate Architect and more 20 consulting firms.

The AIA Los Angeles Design Awards & Party was co-hosted by Charles S. Cohen, developer of the Red Building.
