The Theatre School wins Chicago Building Congress award

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (May 19, 2014) — The Theatre School at DePaul University has won a Merit Award from the Chicago Building Congress, the organization announced at its gala awards dinner Friday.

The Theatre School’s specific honor was the CBC / COAA Owners' Choice Award, presented for the first time this year by the Chicago Building Congress and the Construction Owners Association of America. The Chicago Building Congress is a trade association for the Chicago-area building industry. Construction Owners Association of America is a national organization for building owners who manage facilities development and capital improvement projects.

Opened in 2013, the new Theatre School building is a gateway to DePaul University’s Lincoln Park campus. Highly transparent and featuring an innovative arrangement of functions, the building gives audiences and passersby a behind-the-scenes glimpse into one of the country's top professional theater training programs. The five-story building contains the 100-seat  Sondra & Denis Healy Theatre, the 250-seat Fullerton Stage, and complete production shops, as well as classrooms, rehearsal spaces, and offices.

Entries for the Merit Awards are judged by a panel of 40 Chicago Building Congress  member volunteers on the basis of four criteria: distinctive, functional, or innovative design; quality of construction; impact of the project upon the community; and safety record. In multiple reviews over several months, judges narrow down the entries to four finalists before the surprise announcements at the gala.
