NEW YORK (Jan. 12, 2012) — The Transbay Transit Center was the subject of a presentation for AIA New York.

Mark R. Shoemaker, AIA, principal, and Randolph Volenec, RA, senior project manager, presented “Transbay Transit Center: Grand Central Station of the West” at the Center for Architecture in Manhattan.

The presentation discussed the visionary Transbay Transit Station project and its potential to transform both downtown San Francisco and the Bay Area's regional transportation system. The first new high-speed rail station in the U.S., the Transbay Transit Center will replace the current Transbay Terminal with a modern regional hub connecting eight Bay Area counties and the state of California through 11 transit systems. The $4.2 billion project will also create a neighborhood with new shops, homes, offices and a 5.4-acre public rooftop park. Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects is designing the Transit Center, now under construction for completion in 2017, as well as the adjacent Transbay Tower.

Home to the American Institute of Architects New York Chapter and the Center for Architecture Foundation, the Center for Architecture provides resources to both the public and building industry professionals through exhibitions, programs, and special events.
