256,000 square feet / 24,000 square meters
Century Tower combines a 19-story office building with an 8-level, 530-vehicle parking garage. The design grows from the character and architectural tradition of New Haven and other New England cities. The tower massing is simple and frontal. Setbacks and folded corners allow the building to relate to the neighborhood. Red brick and green painted window lintels and jambs help connect the building to others along Church Street.
The facades are given form by a grid of paired punched openings in the red brick wall. The paired windows are delineated by a dark green lintel and center pilaster and underlined by a common spandrel of dark gray brick. The windows are larger on the upper three floors, increasing the proportion of glass to brick and making the top slightly more reflective. The gray-green top encloses mechanical equipment and repeats the setbacks and folded corners of the shaft. The pattern of the window openings is also repeated in relief on the tower top enclosure walls, integrating it with the building below. The entrance is marked by a gridded lobby wall of green Burlington stone.
Along Church Street, 1,810 square meters (19,500 square feet) of retail space is clad in thermal finish Stony Creek granite. Tenants include People’s Bank and Fidelity Investments.
