The Commons and Courthouse Center consists of two distinct buildings located on 4.8 hectares (11.9 acres) on two blocks in downtown Columbus. Designed by Cesar Pelli when he was Partner for Design at Gruen Associates, the Commons is a public space owned by the City of Columbus that includes a playground, stage, exhibition space, cafeteria and sitting areas. The project is an excellent example of a successful downtown renewal effort. The Commons is a lively public room that functions as a social space. Jean Tinguely’s 30-foot kinetic sculpture, Chaos No. 1, is a focal point.
Courthouse Center, a privately-operated shopping center, meets The Commons along a 208 meter (685-foot) circulation spine.
