20,000 square feet / 2,000 square meters
Founders Hall is a grand civic space centrally located at the heart of the Bank of America Corporate Center and the North Carolina Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. Contributing to Charlotte’s revitalization as a cultural and commercial center, Founders Hall serves as both a meeting place and a space for public events. The design allows for impromptu performances as well as programmed events. The circular monumental stair accommodates a natural stage as well as seating. Acoustics, sound systems and lighting have also been incorporated.
The Hall unifies the disparate uses of the site. Acting as an entry hall for the employees of the NationsBank Tower and flanked by the North Carolina Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, it also contains 6,970 square meters (75,000 square feet) of shops, restaurants and services. Founders Hall also unifies the sidewalk plaza level with the skywalk level, referred to as the Overstreet Mall. The second level connects to three over-street bridges, knitting the complex to the surrounding city.
The interior of Founders Hall is defined by four-story columns supporting a vaulted truss and skylight system. Floors and walls are clad in marble. Structural columns and metal trusswork are painted in gradation from golden ochre to bright yellow, creating a warm, light-filled appearance year round. Four large black-olive trees are grouped around a granite fountain opposite the monumental stair.
In 1993, the AIA/ACSA Council on Architectural Research, the International Union of Architects, and the Du Pont Company named Founders Hall a Merit Finalist in the Benedictus Awards.
