Kyushu University Master Plan+ expand detail
679 acres / 275 hectares
Kyushu University commissioned this master plan to consolidate its three campuses. The location for the combined campus is a hilly natural site at the center of the Itoshima Peninsula. This master plan, designed in association with Mitsubishi Estate Co. Ltd. and Mishima Architects Inc., preserves the landscape while unifying and organizing campus functions.
Buildings, roads and paths are carefully placed to preserve greenery and terrain. The buildings are arranged along a single curving line for maximum conservation of open space. This arrangement creates a continuous green corridor between the site and its natural surroundings. Interspersed with the buildings is a pedestrian path known as Campus Mall. Partially covered to ensure year-round use, the Mall concentrates foot traffic to form centers of activity. Selected sites near the Mall are reserved for future academic and research buildings.
At the south end of campus, a landscaped park known as Campus Common provides views across campus and beyond. Public and commercial facilities are also located here.
