99 acres / 40 hectares
2005
The capital city of the island of Gran Canaria and the largest city of the Canary Islands, Las Palmas de Gran Canarias boasts a busy harbor and beautiful beaches. “The Park of Light” was an entry in a competition to design the master plan for the Las Palmas waterfront. This design defines the waterfront and allows for direct pedestrian access from the urban center to the shoreline. The design extends the city fabric over the site of the old Avenida Maritima, which would be re-routed underground. Coastal space is then developed into a large park with pedestrian routes closed to vehicular traffic and a bridge connecting the park to the docks.
The centerpiece of The Park of Light is a museum dedicated to the history of the port and surrounding areas. The museum would focus on the arts, ecology, geology, flora and fauna of the Canary Islands and the city of Las Palmas.
