The Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA) is a key component of Overture Center for the Arts, a collection of arts venues within a single city block of downtown Madison, Wisconsin. Incorporating new and existing buildings, Overture Center also includes two theaters and a concert hall.
One of the city’s oldest cultural organizations, MMoCA traces its origins to the Madison Art Association, formed in 1901. Expanded from its previous home, the current museum features 11,800 square feet of exhibition space on three floors, providing unprecedented visual art opportunities for the region. The expanded museum includes larger and more flexible galleries, education workshops and learning spaces, and improved visitor amenities. The main entrance on State Street opens into an iconic glass lobby that serves as a gathering area for openings and functions. A grand staircase, elevators, a cloak room, and public restrooms enhance visitors’ experience.
The museum includes a rooftop café and sculpture garden. Open throughout the year, the sculpture garden hosts important exhibitions of large-scale, outdoor sculpture amidst a park-like setting. The garden is the only venue of its kind in Madison, making it a focal point for the city.
