One Market is a multi-tenant office building complex located in San Francisco’s central business district. Built in the 1970s, the complex includes two office towers, public spaces and retailing. Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects designed major improvements to public and retail spaces throughout the project.
Inspired by a strong San Franciscan tradition of idiosyncratic structures that are full of optimism, charm and friendliness, the design of One Market transforms both the interior and exterior spaces and creates a new destination within the city. The design goal of the courtyard was to create a clearly recognizable and memorable space. A six-story pavilion of open, lightweight metal steel takes on the form of a hexagonal dome. A gate tower that echoes the form of this interior latticed pavilion marks not only the entrance to One Market but also the bayside edge of the city. It was designed to be a clear marker, visible from a distance on Mission Street, and from adjacent developing waterfront areas.
In addition to refurbishing exterior facades, ground floor public areas and elevator lobbies, the renovation dramatically improves the aesthetic quality of all public spaces within the project boundaries and creates a truly memorable pedestrian space for San Francisco.
In 1997, One Market received an Award of Merit and an Award of Excellence from the International Illuminating Society.
