Torre Banco Macro+ expand detail
Buenos Aires, Argentina
570,000 square feet / 53,000 square meters
This 30-story headquarters for Banco Macro will be built on one of the last vacant lots of Catalinas Norte, a prominent business district in downtown Buenos Aires. The building is adjacent to Torre BankBoston, also by Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects.
The tower is nearly oval in plan with a gentle inward curve as the tower rises. This shape is efficient but sculptural, fitting the building into an irregularly-shaped five-sided site. The sloping tower top includes a curving plane that faces the city.
The highly reflective glass curtain wall has a smooth and taut appearance. The 1 by 3.8-meter (3.2 by 12.4-foot) glass panels are held in place with vertical silicon glazing. Stainless steel bullnoses mark each floor on the exterior.
In addition to executive and administrative offices, the tower will contain a cafeteria, gymnasium, a daycare, an auditorium and a retail bank. The top two floors will be reserved for presidential offices. These triple-height floors will have views of the river on one side and the city on the other. A stair from the lobby will lead to the auditorium, which will be below grade. The first floor will also include the cafeteria and a large balcony overlooking the river. The gymnasium will be on the mezzanine level.
Office users and bank customers will enter through the same lobby, where a glass wall separates the bank from the office entrance. The lobby will have stone floors, glass walls and a parabolic skylight, creating a luminous interior.
Incorporating high-performance building systems and sustainable materials, the building is being designed for a LEED Gold rating.
