Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects wins Canstruction 2019 Structural Integrity Awards

Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects’ inaugural entry in the 2019 Canstruction New York event earned the five-member design/build team the coveted Structural Ingenuity award. The team spent several months planning, designing, and re-designing, and on November 6th, Build-Out Night, the team canstructed their design over the course of approximately 8 hours.

Per the designers’ Mission Statement, “This structure was created by LOFT’ing (sic) curves and working with the gravity of the cans to create this elusive form. The Loft command fits a surface through selected profile curves that define the surface shape.”

Founded by the Society for Design Administration New York Chapter in 1992, Canstruction® is a trademarked design/build competition currently held in cities around the world. Canstruction New York has helmed the local competition for 25 years and is a 501(c)3, all-volunteer organization. This year, thirty teams of architects, engineers, contractors and students mentored by these design professionals will design and build giant structures made entirely out of full cans of food. The results are displayed for two weeks to the public as magnificent sculpture exhibits at Brookfield Place.
