One Park West is a residential tower along the Mersey River, the historic Liverpool waterfront. The 17-story tower is a key component of Liverpool One, a retail-focused urban regeneration project that interweaves new and old buildings in the city’s center with the largest open-air shopping center in the United Kingdom. The building rises from a corner of Chavasse Park, which was redesigned with below-grade parking and a dining terrace as part of Liverpool One.
One Park West is within view of Liverpool’s most important landmarks, structures from the city’s history as a commercial port. The building is across the park from the Pierhead, home of the Three Graces, a trio of monumental buildings from the period when Liverpool flowered as a world center of trade. One Park West also overlooks Albert Dock, the warehouse complex that revolutionized shipping technology in the 19th century. From the upper terrace of Chavasse Park, One Park West and the Hilton Liverpool frame the view of the dock.
The building is shaped to take full advantage of its views and parkside location. One Park West’s two towers give river views to the maximum number of apartments. The prow of the taller tower leans toward the river, allowing for larger apartments toward the top of the building. The building’s curving form echoes the ellipse of the park, creating a memorable profile along the river.
One Park West is clad in a curtain wall that incorporates glass and an anodized aluminum framing system. The most expressive element of the exterior wall is a series of sloped sun fins. Spanning three stories, the fins increase the perceived scale of the building while shading the façade to improve energy efficiency. The shading devices also recall the grand gestures of the façades of Liverpool’s early buildings.
