This renovation and expansion adds a new performance space to the home of this Orange County theater company while giving the entire building a bright and welcoming new façade.

The new front façade is a curving expanse of glass edged with warmly-colored stone, creating inviting entrances for the original 500-seat Segerstrom Stage and the new 320-seat Julianne Argyros Stage. The entrance now opens onto a semi-circular stepped terrace.

Inside the addition is the new theater, equipped with a balcony, modified flyloft, trap room, orchestra pit, forestage, and back of house facilities. Also in the addition is space for future classrooms conservatory and new administrative offices. As part of the renovation, existing public support spaces were also upgraded.

The South Coast Repertory Theater is a key component of an arts campus around Town Center Drive, for which Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects developed the master plan. The campus unifies a group of performing arts centers—which includes the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall and Samueli Theater and other venues of the Orange County Performing Arts Center—around a 46,000-square-foot plaza. The arts district also includes commercial development and is expected to include additional cultural institutions in the future.
