Muromachi Mitsui Tower: A symbolic gateway to Nihonbashi’s revitalized future

Tokyo, Japan

Part of the decades-long Nihonbashi Revitalization Plan, the Nihonbashi Muromachi Mitsui Tower stands adjacent to the Nihonbashi Mitsui Tower and Mandarin Oriental Hotel and welcomes patrons at the northernmost boundary of the Nihonbashi neighborhood. Symbolizing a ‘King’ and ‘Queen’ relationship, the Muromachi Mitsui Tower creates a direct connection between the taller Mitsui tower, the nearby Mitsukoshimae metro station, and a welcoming plaza full of retail and commercial offerings.

Gateway to gathering

The architectural characteristics of Muromachi Mitsui Tower reflect the traditional shape, façade, and materials of the adjacent Mitsui Tower to create a sense of unity between the two buildings. At the base, a vibrant public plaza forms a pedestrian-friendly urban space between the two structures, enhanced by a large canopy that provides shelter and defines the gathering area. This open, bustling walkway begins at Chuo-dori and is lined with cafés, restaurants, farmers markets, and various retail shops, creating a welcoming gateway.

Flexible for the future

The retail podium is accessed at all four corners, each featuring a uniquely designed “lantern” pavilion that adds to the building’s inviting character. Native landscaping and thoughtfully integrated pavilion lighting enhance the experience. The amenity floors include a conference center, a rooftop garden terrace for pre-function events, and a fitness and wellness studio. Above, the office floors provide a large open floorplate, promoting flexibility for future tenant needs.

Lantern pavilions flow seamlessly into the office lobby.
