Next generation patient care begins at the Center for Innovation in Medical Professions

Cleveland, OH, USA

Cleveland State University desired to train the best in healthcare and reestablish its identity as a provider of excellent health sciences in the region. The future of healthcare relies on innovative solutions and requires education that reflects ever-groundbreaking advances in treatment and care. Today's students are tomorrow's healthcare providers – Cleveland State University’s training anticipates future trends. The Center for Innovative Medical Professions bolsters these important objectives and positively impacts the quality of life for the community it serves.

$2 million
spent to connect underground infrastructure to university's services grid
The creative use of color and elegant materials responds contextually to its location and complements the open green space that help define the campus.

At the intersection of material and details

A three-story central atrium spans the full width of the building, revealing the connection between the steel structure and a dramatic wood-clad inverted pyramidal ceiling. Combined with the open stair, this new facility exposes a strong, straightforward architectural expression while providing a welcoming environment.

Collaborating to discover solutions to the most difficult health challenges

Top-quality healthcare is integrated and collaborative. This highly dynamic and interdisciplinary space accommodates programs for nursing and health sciences, a speech and hearing clinic, and student health services. Northeast Ohio Medical College is also onsite, sharing space throughout the building with the Center for Innovative Medical Professions to create a collaborative culture for transformative research and new healthcare programs.

This new state-of-the-art health education building provides classrooms, teaching labs, simulation labs, offices, and shared common spaces interspersed on all three floors.
The intentional design structures adjacencies through an arrangement that provides overlap of programs to encourage a highly collaborative academic experience.
“Pelli Clarke & Partners brought a high level of creativity to our project on a number of levels. They introduced us to the idea of spaces that can encourage serendipitous meetings between faculty and students. To that end, the building includes a number of significant open spaces, including exterior spaces, perfectly providing such opportunities. It is a joy to see them being used as intended.” — Vida B. Lock, PhD, RN, Dean of the School of Nursing, Cleveland State University
This flagship building extends the campus south of its center and projects its mission of health and wellness.
